Teaching and Learning

In addition to our comprehensive Religious Education provision, the teachings of Christ permeate all subjects that we teach and all that we do. All pupils have a Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) lesson each week in which Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural (SMSC) themes are addressed in the light of our Catholic tradition. We use the TenTen RSE programme, which has been approved by Westminster Diocese.

Our Vision and Values
Religious Education

It is our intent through our Religious Education curriculum to engage, inspire and challenge our pupils. While having a focus on the Catholic faith, we aim to raise awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities in order to respect and understand them. Through our RE lessons, pupils will learn how to critically evaluate a range of topics and issues, make links with Catholic Social Teachings, our FCJ school values and learn about different Catholic saints and then put their faith into action.  They will also develop skills in considering evidence and structuring an argument. It is our aim to ensure pupils receive stimulating and engaging lessons which encourage them in their faith formation

Our curriculum from Key Stage 5-3 is fully mapped and guided by the Religious Education Directory (Key Stage 3) and the Curriculum Directory, published by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales (CBCEW) (Key Stage 4 and 5).

Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is based on a tradition of episcopal and papal writings on political, economic and social issues facing our time.

 

At Maria Fidelis, applying Catholic Social Teaching and the Common Good is an integral part of living out our six core FCJ values Excellence, Gentleness, Hope, Justice, Dignity and Companionship, which underpin all the work we do. The key values of CST are found at the core of the Gospel. The key themes of these teachings are:

  • The Dignity of Work and Participation

Awareness of social justice issues are promoted through our weekly assemblies, in curriculum areas and through the PSHE programme.
