An Important Message From Public Health England
A group of 7 Year 9 pupils from Maria Fidelis Catholic School, Camden, won the Junior Prize for the Institute of Physics Award for Practical Project Work at the regional Big Bang Fair in July 2013. These pupils will be presenting their work at the Big Bang Fair National finals at the Birmingham NEC from 12th -14th March 2014.
Their project called 'Does your choice of hair dye matter?' aimed to see which type of hair dye on the market weakened hair the most. This time the pupils will be testing their products on real hair as a comparison to their first round where they used imitation hair.
Pupils were also given the challenge to raise funds themselves to cover accommodation costs and together with a generous donation from Set Square Surveyors, Farringdon, they have successfully do so. We wish them the best of luck with the final stage of the competition.
The CitySafe Roadshow was launched at Maria Fidelis Catholic School on Monday 24th June 2013. 120 Year 6 students from Edith Neville, St Aloysius and St Mary’s & St Pancras were invited to workshops on staying Safe whilst traveling to and from school. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness about the City Safe havens at Euston Station.
What a Young Person can expect from a CitySafe Haven:
• You can enter the Safe Haven and declare the danger or threat involved
• You can ask to be referred to a police officer
• Someone in the Safe Haven will contact your parent/carer or the police
• Someone in the Safe Haven will log the incident from your description
• You can wait in the Safe Haven until the immediate danger has passed and until the police arrive or your carer has been contacted.
The Event included a musical performance and featured guest speaker; Choice FM’s DJ Abrantee who gave an energetic and inspiring speech.
On 1st July 2013, Maria Fidelis’ Morsale Ghafooar (Year 10), gave an outstanding speech about being an Afghan girl at the regional final of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. She had won the regional final in order to reach the Grand Final which was held in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the South Bank Centre. She spoke with passion and conviction and won the audience over with her engaging manner. The school is very proud of her fantastic achievement and we look forward to hosting the regional competition in November.
Our students achieved great success in a film competition. This is their story in their own words..
From December to February we worked with the One KX Centre to produce a short film regarding a bioethical topic of our choice for the Nuffield Box Office Bioethics Competition. After much debate we decided to center our short film on intersex, discussing the social, legal and ethical implications of not being typically male or typically female. We questioned the importance of gender in society and whether or not the presence of intersex means that there should be more than two genders. With lessons in film making, interviewing and expert support from Neal Parsons, filmmaker Martha Henson, and contributions from both Intersex UK and members of the public, we were fortunate enough to have won this year’s competition and attend a private screening of our winning film entry which preceded Nuffield Councils Annual Lecture held by leading bioethicist Professor John Harris at the Wellcome Collection.
Primarily as new filmmakers we wanted this film to really challenge and question our attitudes regarding gender and help raise acknowledgement of bioethical subjects that may not necessarily be at the forefront of daily news. You can find our winning entry on YouTube at:

100 Days of Peace
This term Year 8 have been working on the theme 100 Days of Peace in their RE lessons. This work came about because of an initiative directly from Westminster Diocese.
The project began during enrichment day at the end of last half term where they worked together with London Citizens; the students interviewed the local shop keepers in North Gower Street –to find out problems which may exist in the local area and if the shopkeepers would be willing to work in partnership with City Safe.
The students also worked together on issues in their school community and their own local community – they wrote poems, and responses to violence in their local areas and they have been studying different ways to deal with conflicts. The students have also worked in a cross-curricular way with the history department on the historical nature of the Olympics and its link to peace and also looking at Martin Luther King and how he inspired people to stop racial discrimination based on Christian teachings.
In class and at home the year 8's have been keeping peace journals (examples on the web page) and recording their daily thoughts and ideas about peace and adding images, songs and news that inspire peace. They have been exploring the concept of human dignity and why peace is so important and linking this to the original Olympic truce and values.
Each class has been asked to create a play list of songs that promote the values of peace and no-war and we hope to burn their play list on to CD’s so that they not only have their peace journals but a CD to remind them of what they are working towards even after the 100 days is up.
They have also learnt about the Western Wall and have written their own letters to God about their hopes for peace. These letters are going to be sent to Israel to be placed in the Wall.
Year8 will also be participating in a peace walk, organising a reconciliation service and sending messages of peace to Japan in the form of peace cranes.
Year 8 have enjoyed working on this project- please continue to check the school website for updates. For more information have a look at our webpages
